Exciting things are happening in the National Strategic Selling Institute! We are enjoying our new space in the College of Business, and our program is growing rapidly. Currently we are accepting sales certificate candidates for the fall recruiting class; 75 students applied for roughly 50 openings in the program. After this fall, we will have 150 students in the program, up from 122 in the year prior. We are on track to grow the Certificate in Professional Strategic Selling to 250 students within the next two-to-three years. Further, we have proposed a Sales Major that currently is working its way through the approval process. We have received departmental approval; the next step will be approval from the College of Business faculty. If all goes according to plans, the Sales Major will be in place for the Fall 2018 semester. Continue reading “Update from the National Strategic Selling Institute”
Report from Esther Swilley, Interim Head of the Department of Marketing
This year’s annual Marketing Advisory Council on October 7th was a great success. Instead of talking to our council, we had the council talk to us. Starting with an introduction to academic research, faculty and advisory members were put in to groups to discuss what is happening in marketing, how to mesh their needs with our research activities, partnering opportunities, and how to brand the marketing department. Faculty members were given Post-It Notes to write down information. These notes were then posted so that the room could discuss each topic. Everyone commented afterwards that it was a great meeting because each side went away with more understanding of what is happening corporately and academically. Six students took home $2,500 in cash prizes as part of the recent Edward Jones Sales Competition, a collaboration between the National Strategic Selling Institute, or NSSI, in Kansas State University’s College of Business Administration and Edward Jones.
The competition saw students putting their selling skills to the test in a role-playing scenario as an Edward Jones financial adviser. Their objective in the role-play was to convince a prospect to use Edward Jones for his or her financial advising services by securing a second appointment to further discuss the prospect’s investment portfolio.
