Sometimes the most important component of a distance program happens face-to-face.

Each summer, students in the Master of Psychology with emphasis in Industrial and Organizational Psychology (MIOP) program travel to K-State’s Manhattan campus. There, they experience an intensive two-week session that both students and instructors call the “heart and soul” of this hybrid distance program.

Through strong support from their cohort, MIOP students complete rigorous course work covering concepts and behavioral methodologies for problems facing today’s human resource professionals. They also use the face-to-face time to form relationships and establish the basis for lifelong personal and professional connections with each other.

“The summer sessions generate a high level of energy in and out of the classroom,” said Clive Fullagar, professor of psychology.

Sara Shepherd, Terri Wirth (2011 cohort)

“During these sessions, distance students can interact with faculty and other students in both formal and informal situations. They get to know who else is going to be in the virtual classroom and place a person at the other end of the network.”

MIOP’s summer sessions alone cover half of the program’s courses, keeping the remaining distance-based course load reasonable throughout the rest of the year for students who are typically full-time working professionals. Once the summer session ends, MIOP students always seem to express a desire to visit campus again.

John Clark, Sandy Heard, Darci Bohnenblust (2010 cohort)

“The greatest impact of the on-campus experience is the exceptionally low drop-out rate in the program, less than 5 percent,” Fullagar said. “Students develop a high level of commitment to the program and to the university.”

  1. Congratulations to K-State, Dr. Clive Fullagar and the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) for being so instrumental in getting this program going and for keeping it going for 10 years. Congratulations to all the graduates who followed in our class’ footsteps (I was part of the first cohort back in 2000).

In the spring of 2000, it was a lucky link to the K-State family and good marketing on the part of DCE that brought me to the MIOP program. I couldn’t be happier with the quality and delivery method that was used then, and now, that helped a busy professional accomplish her goals.

The MIOP program has been excellent from the beginning. For me, it was the summer sessions that made the program highly successful and unique. I’ll never forget Masters level statistics accomplished in two weeks while on campus! Thanks Clive, you got me through it!

How am I applying my degree? As we speak, I’m putting together a proposal for a Human Resources program at a small agricultural school, Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, and plan to use MIOP as the model.

Thanks K-State, Clive and continuing education for making my current opportunity possible.
