Program Spotlight: Conflict Resolution

Few individuals purposely place themselves in conflict, but having the skills to resolve disputes and negotiations can come in handy in nearly every profession.

K-State’s online program in conflict resolution is offered as both a graduate or undergraduate certificate. For Debra Roby, a court-appointed mediator from Orlando, Fla., the graduate certificate was just what she needed to transition into mediation from her background in commercial insurance.

“I chose K-State because I could complete the program in two semesters in an affordable way,” she said. “Having this certificate from K-State increases my value and allows me more opportunity.”

Completion of certain courses in the program meets Kansas Office of Dispute Resolution training requirements for various types of mediation. However, professionals in fields like social services, business, political science, psychology, women’s advocacy, criminal justice and communications can use conflict resolution tactics daily for a more streamlined workplace.

“I’m glad to be able to complete the graduate certificate from a distance,” Roby said. “It would be impossible for me to achieve this level of education otherwise.”
